The Phantom and Hero are on patrol in the jungle, just outside of the Phantom's home "the Deep Woods", a quiet morning in Bangalla, or is it?
The warm Bangallan wind was blowing Hero's mane lightly as the Phantom and Hero slowly made it to the top of the hill. "Well, Hero old friend looks like it will be a quiet morning for us today. With the warring tribes at peace now, and the river pirates that had been terrorizing the locals have been tucked away safely in the Jungle Patrol prison, I think we have a much needed rest coming to us don't you think? Hero snorts, and shakes his head as if in agreement with the Phantom, "Too bad Devil could not be on patrol with us today, but his place is with his newly born pups, and mate!".
Devil his faithful wolf companion had just become a father to a healthy batch of pups, and needed to be by his mates side. Much like his master the Phantom, one day he too will be unable to carry on his duties a protector, and companion to the Phantom, and one of his offspring will take his place at the side of the "Ghost Who Walks!"

The morning sun shone brightly through the dusty windshield of the rented Ford, as the the Palmers and their guides jeeps made their way back to the main road that will take the small group of travelers back to Mawitaan, the capital of Bangalla. The smooth grass covered road was a welcome sight after Diana, her uncle Dave, and the Bangallan natives following in the second jeep, had traversed over rough terrain in the last week, and half.
Looking to her right, Dave Palmer's hat was pulled down slightly over his eyes, it had been a long trip for both of them, and Dave Palmer was looking forward to a comfortable bed, and a hot shower. Smiling, Diana swerves the jeep back and forth to wake her uncle up. Uncle Dave jumps suddenly awake, causing Diana to laugh! "Well Uncle Dave, this expedition turned out to be very fruitful after all!" Uncle Dave slips on his Dolce & Gabbana Sunglasses, and pulls down the brim of his hat from the morning sun. "What's that?....Oh, yes, very fruitful indeed sweetie, the readers and the museum officials back home will be quite surprised when we return with our findings! By the way,......are we close to Rusty Fenton's trading post, I sure would like to drink an ice cold Coca-Cola!" Diana remarks, "It's just around the bend, about ten minutes away Uncle Dave, I'm a little thirsty myself!

The road begins to smooth out as they near the trading post of Rusty Fenton. Rusty was an old army pal of Uncle Dave's, and retired to the jungle after the service, he was a hunter and trapper in Canada, but the cold weather was rough on him so he moved to Bangalla. Rusty had taught some of the local natives how to do road construction, as well as concrete work, that was why all around his trading post there were sidewalks and rock walks for his building. "Hey there's Rusty's place, and a nice ice cold Coke for us, and the guides!". Uncle Dave pats Diana on the shoulder as they approach the trading post.
"Well, I guess next time you write an article on unsolved historical mysteries, people won't tell you, that you are crazy! That idol you found, is the key item of the dig. I just can't believe after all this time, finally you have linked the Spanish to this coastline here in Bangalla!" Suddenly Diana slams on the brakes as a large African horned bull, followed by a mule wanders onto the jungle road! "Wow, that was close" Said Uncle Dave, "We almost wrecked! I guess Someone's animals must have gotten loose!"

Suddenly a shot rings out, and the large steer crumples to the ground in front of the jeeps, blocking the road. " Someone just shot that animal!!!"
Uncle Dave looks to his right, and motions to Diana, "Looks like we have company Diana, and not the friendly type either!!!" The guides had already jumped out of the jeep that was following the Palmers, and begun to return fire at the oncoming attackers as the Palmers exited their vehicle.

Bullets began to ricochet off both of the jeeps bodies, as the clatter of machine gun fire deafened Diana's ears. The peaceful jungle forest had erupted into utter chaos as she and Uncle Dave exited their vehicle. As Diana ran to the rear of the jeep, she saw the guides following them in the second jeep in a flurry of action as they were firing off round after round from the British .303 Enfield bolt action rifles, and trying to dodge the hail of bullets! The windows of both jeeps begun to shatter from the machine gun spray from the oncoming attackers.

Dismounting from Hero, the Phantom runs to the edge of the cliff from where the sound of gunfire is emanating. Bringing his binoculars up and focusing them on the disturbance below, the Phantom could see into the small valley where the the two jeeps were being assaulted by mercenaries. "Great Scott!" exalted the Phantom, " I thought I heard the sound of machine gun fire,.....those people down there are outgunned, they have no idea what they are up against!!! Pivoting on his left heel, the Phantom races toward Hero who had already sensed his master's urgency as he ran toward him. With one leap, the Phantom was in the saddle, and into the jungle! The cracks, and pops of gunfire echoed in the valley, as The Phantom, and Hero rapidly approached the melee, thinking to himself, every moment lost could mean a life or two lost to the bandits with machine guns!

"Amateurs!", screamed Uncle Dave to Diana! "where did these idiots learn to shoot, you may as well have given machine guns to bunch of monkeys!" Uncle Dave, and Diana began to squeeze off rounds from their revolvers, hitting some of the advancing mercenaries. "Stop complaining Uncle Dave and just shoot!" Diana and Uncle Dave began to fire back at the men in the tall grass, although they both were crack shots, they had never come under machine gun fire before. Their attackers seemed to be firing wildly, and did not seem like seasoned soldiers at all Uncle Dave thought to himself!

Spurring Hero on the Phantom leans down close to Hero's right ear "Come on boy, looks like we have our work cut out for us today!" The Phantom rapidly pulls both of his Colt 1911's, cocks the hammers back, and steels himself for the worst, hoping and praying he will be in time to stop a slaughter of the heavily outgunned party of explorers.

As Diana hurriedly reloaded her colt, her concentration is broken as she hears Uncle Dave scream out her name. "Diana, look out!" Diana's lightning quick reflexes take over, as she sees a blur of a man mere feet away reaching for her, "C'mere you little.....", but before the mercenary can touch her, the Colt's muzzle flashes an explosion of fire, and the mercenary drops dead at Diana's feet.
Photo by M young / fx by Magestiq
Bullets whiz past Diana's body, striking the ground and the jeeps behind her, as she steps over the dead body of the mercenary returning fire at the machine gun wielding thugs. Uncle Dave thinks to himself although Diana is a sweet girl, she shows just how dangerous she is, when pushed to the point of survival.
Diana seems almost oblivious to the sound of gunfire behind her, as the native guides return fire with their bolt action .303 rifles from behind their jeep, their bullets flying past her head like insects during the summer.

Suddenly from out of nowhere the Jungle Patrol troop transport truck crashes through the underbrush, placing itself as a barrier between the mercenaries, and the Palmer's expedition. An officer leaps from his horse, while the rest of the Patrol officers pour out of the back of the truck, opening fire on the hoods with machine guns. Colonel Worubu of the Jungle Patrol yells to his men, "Looks like that tip we received was right after all men, let's give these folks some cover fire, and show these bloody scoundrels no one breaks the law on our watch!!!!"
One of the native guides stands and raises his rifle in joy over seeing the Jungle Patrol arrive to help, "la louange être Dieu, l'aide est arrivée!!!" ("praise be God, help has arrived!!!"). His companions reach for him too late to pull him back, as a bullet strikes him in the shoulder by the wild firing mercenaries. The guide slumps to the the ground, as his companions return fire with their rifles, and tend to their wounded comrade.

Gunfire erupts as the Jungle Patrol enters the fray, suddenly the mercenaries realize they are out numbered, and outclassed against the jungle hardened policemen. several of the mercenaries fall dead in their tracks from the hail of bullets from the Patrol! The Palmers race forward to assist the Patrol as they press hard the advance against the criminals who attacked them.

Upon seeing the emergence of the Phantom on horseback, the pair of explorers are taken aback by the strange new character that has entered into the battle. "Diana, look!"
Diana moves closer to Uncle Dave making the comment, "Um, you have got to be kidding me! Who in the world is that Uncle Dave?" Astonished as well at this purple clad man firing at the aggressors who were trying to overtake the expedition, Uncle Dave answers his niece in in unbelief, "Um, well,.......I have no earthly idea myself !!!!"

With both pistols blazing, and the reigns in his mouth, The Phantom and Hero burst onto the scene of the gun battle! The Palmers can only stop and stare at the strange new person who has appeared on the scene helping the Jungle Patrol. To their amazement, the Jungle Patrol, does not seem at all fazed by this new person who has joined the fight! Diana looks on in disbelief, "....Well, Uncle Dave, that's something you don't see every day!" Uncle Dave, still gazing at the bizarre scene unfolding in front of them, looks over his right shoulder at the guides from the village are cheering 'espírito que anda!!!' ("Ghost who walks"). "Well, from the sound our guides are making, it appears that this man on horseback is the famous "Phantom, Ghost Who Walks!", the man who never dies!".

Colonel Worubu, coming under repeated machine gun fire drops to one knee, drawing a bead on one of the mercenary's attacking them. "Give no quarter lads, if they won't surrender then put a bullet in them!" A blaze of fire erupted from Colonel Worubu's Beretta, and the jungle patrols rifles, as the mercenaries took cover firing wildly at the soldiers. This was not what they were told when they were offered money to attack the expedition. A young girl, her uncle, and some native guides were one thing, but not a company of Jungle Patrol soldiers.

Leaping from his horse, the Phantom fires at the attacking mercenaries, and heads for cover by a large tree close to the Palmer"s jeeps. wood splinters all around him as the chatter from the machine gun rips into the tree and the vines. The mercenaries begin firing in all directions, as they are now being peppered with gunfire from all sides, the Jungle Patrol, the expedition, and now this strange purple clad man on a white horse. one of the mercenaries exclaims: "Who's the whack job in purple???"
The leader of the group responds, "It's the Phantom, just keep firing, we gotta pull back and get outta here I never signed on for any of this!!!"
As the word spreads of the appearance of the Phantom one mercenary after another begins to panic, another mercenary exclaims,: "...The Phantom???!!!! ....I'm leaving! You hang around here and those Bandar will shrink all our heads!!!!"

After maneuvering his way around behind the palmers jeep during the confusion and searching through the crates, one of the mercenaries named Eichmann, finds what he was looking for, the one link that proves that the Spanish came to Bangalla many years ago. Gleaming in his hand was an ancient Inca idol made of solid gold. " ......Ya, come to papa my golden treasure,....by the end of the day you will have earned me much euros for little work, HaHaHaHa!!!!" The chatter of machine gun fire fills the air, and bullets hit the jeep that Eichmann is plundering. "Das fools! If I don't leave soon my own men will end up shooting me as well, I need to escape now while I can!".
Bullets began to ricochet off the vehicle, and hit the ground as well as the trees as Eichmann crawls away from the jeep. Suddenly Eichmann realizes he cannot slink away as easily as originally thought, the young Palmer girl was returning to the jeeps,.....too bad for her he thought to himself!

The large bearded mercenary stands up and begins to fire short bursts of machine gun fire in random directions, "They ain't nuthin' we got machine guns, shoot anyone that moves, even the Jungle patrol, just remember,....... "Dead men tell no tales", HaHaHaHaHaHaHa!!!"
looking over his shoulder the mercenary sees the frightened burrow looking at him. "Hey, I think I'll even shoot the donkey just for good measure, Haw, Haw, Haw!!!"
Just as the man turned and pulled up his machine gun to shoot the frightened animal, the Phantom had bolted from behind a tree towards him , "I don't think so braggart!" announces the Phantom!, slamming his right fist into the man's jaw knocking him off his feet instantly! As the man falls backwards, he seems to almost levitate for a split second as the Phantom moves with almost lightning speed past him before he hits the ground with a loud thud. With bullets whizzing all around him the Phantom, he rolls across the ground trying to seek cover from stray bullets, taking cover behind a rock outcropping.
Diana realizing she is out of ammunition, and Uncle Dave has moved forward with the guides and the Jungle Patrol, she begins to search for fallen weapons to help Uncle Dave, and protect herself. As she rounds the front of their jeep, she hears the cocking of a bolt on a weapon from behind her. Drop the pistol Mein Leibchen, or I will drop you, HaHaHaHaHa!!!!!

Diana froze in her tracks as she heard the strange voice from behind her call her name, and ordered her to not move. " Please do not move Miss Palmer, Mein Leibchen", I truly would hate to perforate such a beautiful young Fraulein as yourself, I just need a moment, and then I shall be gone,.....Ya?" Diana turned her head slightly, ignoring the shouts of surrendering mercenaries, and random gunfire, fully aware that all attention is diverted away from her, and if she made a move it could mean certain death. Diana remained motionless, knowing that her spare rifle ammo, and revolver bullets were in the Ford Bronco, plus the weapons dropped during the skirmish were too far away to reach. She was helpless, and this angered her that at this very moment she was the one thing she tried never to be, and that was the "Damsel in distress".

As Diana turned to look at the man who had her a such a dis-advantage, she suddenly realized who it was that was behind her. "You!!!" "The man who was so interested in our excavation trip at President Luaga's party!" Chuckling, Eichmann grinned from ear to ear, with a huge smile. "Ya Fraulein, it is I,....I do apologize for the deception, but it was necessary to be a so called "patron" of the arts in order to reach my goal! You see I only wanted the Gold statue for my employer, it is a business transaction you see, nothing more, you and your dear uncle may keep the rest of the artifacts, and in the end we all get what we want yes? Am I not generous Leibchen? "HAHAHAHA!" Angrily Diana responds to him, "That does not belong to you whoever you are, that idol belongs to the museum in Bangalla, along with all the other items we dug up at the site,....you will not get away with this you crumb!!!". Continuing to slip into the brush behind him, Eichmann makes one last declaration to Diana "HAHAHA, but my dear I already have!"
Within seconds, Eichmann is gone, slowly Diana turns to her left with no trace of him to be seen. Diana, ignoring the gun battle around her, she hurriedly snatches her Winchester rifle from the ground, running to the back of the jeep grabbing a handful ammo from the open ammo crate. At a dead run Diana begins to chase after Eichmann in the direction she thinks he disappeared to, pausing only to load her rifle, and listen for footfalls in the jungle floor.

As Sgt. Caleba, and Private Anuli were holding two of the mercenaries at gun point, Caleba looks past the hoods they have just captured, "Anuli! What's that crazy little girl doing chasing after that fellow for? Is that not Eichmann?" Anuli looking in the same direction pulls up his field glasses, and spots Eichmann clinbing a hill through the bamboo "....Yes, Seargent, it is!!" Looking frantically around there is no one free to go after the Palmer girl, Sgt. Caleba turns to Anuli, "Keep an eye on these two rats, and I will go after the Palmer girl, she has no idea where she is, we are too close to "Deep Woods" for her to go running about!"
Sgt. Caleba was friendly with some of the Bandar natives, but he had heard one too many tales of people poking around in "Deep Woods" that should not, and are never heard from again!
Even though the jungle hardened Sgt. had met the Phantom on occasion, he disappeared as quickly as he appeared. "Deep Woods" was his dwelling place, and they both gave him the chills when he thought of them.

Silently, Diana moves through the bamboo forest searching for Eichmann. She has hunted many times before, both for animal predators, as well as human , and she well aware of how dangerous her new quarry is. Diana concentrates on listening intently to the sounds of the forest, but the constant ringing in her ear from the previous gun battle is throwing her usual keen senses off. The Bamboo grove was silent, except for the swaying of the trees, and the distant battle winding down.

Seeing Diana snatch up a rifle and give chase to Eichmann, Sgt. Caleba reloads his Enfield rifle and runs after her into the jungle.Sgt. Caleba was born in this region, and even though he has had contact with the Bandar in the past, it has only been in a civilized setting, never in the jungle. The Bandar are feared by all who know of them and the legend of the Phantom. One does not take lightly when you see the sign post of moss covered wood, with a human skull mounted upon it saying "Deep Woods, Do Not Enter!", just the thought of "Deep Woods" sends a chill up Sgt. Caleba's spine! This is the farthest he has ever ventured into their territory, the last thing he wants to do is anger the headhunter's, he only hopes he is in time to pull the Palmer girl back before she goes too far from the main path!

Upon hearing the sound of crunching dry bamboo shoots approaching rapidly behind her, Diana turns to see a Jungle Patrol soldier running toward her, trying to get her attention. "Missy Palmer, Missy Palmer.....wait, wait!!!!"
If Diana was to take her shot this was the moment, quickly she ratchets the lever action on the rifle, drops to her knee and tries to block out the Jungle patrolman's voice. Suddenly she sees Eichman moving through the dense bamboo thicket, takes aim and fires!

Diana quickly fires off a rapid succession of rounds in the direction of where she saw Eichmann in the thicket before her. Bamboo splinters all round Eichmann as he sprints to the edge of the bamboo thicket, reaching large trees to give himself cover, peering around the edge of the tree to see who pursues him. Diana no longer able to see Eichmann lowers her rifle as Sgt. Caleba places his hand on her shoulder. "I'm sorry Missy Palmer we can go no farther!". Before Diana can utter a word, machine gun fire tears into the foliage around her and Sgt. Caleba!
" I warned you, you little hellcat!!" Eichmann fired several bursts from him machine gun at his pursuers, thinking this would dissuade them from further pursuing him. Sgt. Caleba, and Diana return fire at Eichmann, but too late, for Eichmann, the slippery eel himself has already gone!

Diana hears an excited voice behind her, and a firm grip on her arm pulling her back "...No, no Missy, I say you go no farther after that man in jungle, he very dangerous, and he has machine gun! Besides, we on the edge of "Deep Woods"...... Bandar headhunter territory, we got no business wit them folk! You come back from there now,.....we no need to rile them folk, if he get caught by the Bandar, they shrink his head, and he get what he deserve!" Frustrated that she has lost sight of the mercenary, Diana stands up, and turns back toward the jungle patrol officer, knowing she will now never again see the artifact they had so long searched for. The Two back away slowly from where they were standing, with rifles at the ready in case they were fired upon. In the distance they could hear the footfalls of someone running through the jungle, then nothing, Eichmann was gone!

Emerging from the bamboo grove edge, Colonel Worubu, and the Jungle patrol surrounds what is left of the mercenaries group. "......Gentlemen, I will say this only once, drop your weapons now, and surrender to Jungle patrol, or we will bury you where you fall,....I mean what I say!!". The remaining mercenaries began to look around at their diminished ranks, realizing now they were out numbered, and low on ammunition, began to drop their weapons. "Hands on your heads and lock your fingers together, then fall into a single file!" shouted the Colonel. The Jungle Patrol swiftly moved in to handcuff and take the mercenaries into custody as Colonel Worubu surveyed the situation. "Corporal D'arnot,.....gather up these scallywags weapons, and toss them into the back of the truck, and then radio headquarters to send another truck to pick up the bodies for the potter's field!!"

The Phantom emerges from the jungle brush dragging two dazed mercenaries by the collars of their shirts. A Jungle Patrol soldier runs towards them, and quickly handcuffs the mercenaries, while the Phantom walks towards the jungle guides. "My friends, is everyone alright?" The guides rush to meet their friend and protector, "Only Tinashee is wounded O Ghost Who Walks, but not bad!" Another of the men laughing says, "Yes He started celebrating much too soon when he saw the Jungle Patrol arrive, then bad men shot him!" Tinashee holding his shoulder speaks to the Phantom, "Thank you for your help O great spirit of the jungle, you have helped me like you helped my great Grandfather once when you saved him from drowning in the Etabwee river many years ago." The Phantom realizing Tinashee believes that the Phantom is immortal, and is referring to a previous Phantom who aided Tinashee's great grandfather. "Ah,......yes, I remember that day well my friend, when you return home, tell your family that I wish great blessings upon them, and pray that the spirits of the jungle continually watch over and care for them!" One by one the Guides shake hands with the Phantom, many have heard of him, but to actually meet the "Ghost who walks" was a great honor indeed!
"Deus o abençoe fantasma!" (God bless you Phantom), Chanted the guides as they all raise their rifles in honor of the phantom!

With the remaining mercenaries rounded up, The Phantom whistles, and Hero comes to him in a smooth gallop. As the Phantom mounts Hero and begins to settle into his saddle, The Phantom reaches inside his saddle bag and tosses a small leather pouch to one of the guides, ".....Take these gold coins my friends, pay the doctor for the care of Tinashee's wounds, then divide the rest of what is left among yourselves". The Phantom turns to the other native guides, and waves farewell, "May the spirits of the jungle guide you in all your many life's journeys!"
The Phantom rides Hero into the direction of the Palmers and the Jungle Patrol, as they are rounding up the last of the mercenaries, the Phantom is eager to speak to Dave and Diana Palmer. The Phantom had not realized at first who he had come to the aid of when the battle had started. What strange twist of fate has brought the childhood love of Kit Walker and her uncle to Bangalla?

As the Jungle patrol rounds up the last of the mercenaries, The Phantom steers Hero toward the Palmer's jeep. As The Phantom ties off Hero's reigns, he strides towards Dave Palmer, with a large smile on his face. He had not seen Dave Palmer in many years, but he still looked as youthful as he did when he lived in Diana's hometown. Diana puts her hands on her hips, and says in a low voice, "....You have got to be kidding me,....really??? What is he wearing???" Uncle Dave tells Diana in a hushed tone, "....Shhhhhh girl, this man just helped save our skins just now, besides it's not every day you get to meet a jungle legend!"

As the Phantom walks toward the Palmers, he passes them, almost as if they were not even there at all. The Phantom ties hero's reigns to a small tree by a trough of water outside Rusty Fenton's trading post porch. Diana and Uncle Dave watch the Phantom as he searches through one of his saddle bags, pulling out a canteen, and carrots. Clearing his throat, Dave Plamer speaks, "AHEM,........I say, ...thank you for your assistance Mister........... ah....." The Phantom seems to be completely preoccupied with giving water, and carrots to his horse, speaking in hushed tones to his faithful friend hero, who was very thirsty. Once satisfied that Hero was taken care of, the Phantom turns towards the Palmers, with a smile on his face. As the Phantom passes Diana, staring straight into her eyes, Diana blushes. "Good morning!". Briskly, the Phantom approaches Uncle Dave with an extended hand. "Dave Palmer of the New York Sentinel I believe!"
".......Um, why yes,...exactly,....ah, how do you know who I am?" Dave is taken by surprise that this mysterious man knows who he is. "Well, I have read your articles, when papers have made it here to Bangalla, and....I'm friends with your pal with Rusty Fenton as well!". Dave Palmer seems puzzled at the Phantom knowing Rusty. "So you and Rusty Fenton know each other, ...by the way, where is Rusty, he usually is here this time of day!" While Uncle Dave and the Phantom shake hands, Diana a few feet away, bends over to pick up her Winchester rifle, that had fallen to the ground. As she is leaning over, she steals a glance at the attire of the phantom. "Please forgive me, I forgot my manners, I have not introduced myself..... I am called The Phantom, Deep Woods is my home, and when I heard the ruckus here in the valley I decided to investigate!" Dave Palmer responds, "Well you have just helped save our lives my friend, you have our gratitude,....by the way,.....I am forgetting my manners as well, this is my niece Diana Palmer,....Diana, this is the legendary Phantom I spoke of earlier." Looking the Phantom up and down slowly, Diana smiles at the Phantom. shaking Diana's hand the Phantom remarks, " Yes,....I have read of the many exploits of Miss Palmer, a very well traveled young lady, sportswoman, and Olympic swimmer. I admire your accomplishments, as well as your handling of firearms. Not many women can shoot as well as you do." Diana, when shaking the hand of this mysterious man, feels something strangely familiar about him, almost as if she knows him, but that would be impossible, she had never traveled to this part of Africa before. "Why, thank you, Mister......, um,..... I'm sorry, I have to ask,.....what is that you are wearing???? Dave palmer laughs uncomfoftably, and hugs his neice, "Im afraid Diana has a bad habit of "overly curious" sometimes, Phantom, we greatly appreciate yours and the Jungle patrols help." The Phantom smiles, and crosses his arms, "That's alright I'm used to that reaction,....by the way, do you have any idea why they attacked you or what you wanted?" Breaking free from Uncle Dave's arms Diana shrieks, "Oh my gosh, I completely forgot!", running toward the back of the open back door of the jeep, Diana lifts up the cloth that the idol was wrapped in before it was stolen. "That guy I chased stole the Inca idol Uncle Dave, I heard one of the patrolmen call him by name, I believe he said "Eichmann" The Phantom crossed his arms, and commented, ".....Hmm, I heard he was in the area, if he has the idol, he means to sell it. Miss Palmer, which direction did you say he was heading?" Diana pointed in the direction she and the patrolman came from when they last saw Eichmann, but as she turned around the Phantom was running toward his horse. The Phantom stops and whistles, " Come Hero!", the Phantom's horse bolts toward the Phantom, kicking up the dust as he gallops toward him.

The Phantom quickly turns on his heel, and sprints toward Hero, and prepares to mount his horse. looking back at the Palmers, the Phantom speaks: ".....Listen folks, you head back to your base camp, with the Jungle Patrol, I'm going after Eichmann, and I will bring the idol, and Eichmann back to Jungle Patrol headquarters! There is a storm coming in from the South, and I don't want Eichmann to get too far ahead of me even though he is on foot!" A warm, gentile wind begins to blow across the flat grassy area causing the trees to sway, giving a short relief to the humid climate. Diana's hair begins to lightly whip about her face as she makes her way toward the mysterious man, who moments ago had helped save their lives, and received a king's welcome from the local native guides.
Everything had happened so fast, she and her uncle had hardly any time to think. Diana begins walking hurriedly toward the Phantom as he is about to ride away.
"Hey,.......wait just a second! I want to go with you o.k.? Just let me grab another gun, and some ammo, and a horse, and we will head out after him together!
The Phantom turned to look at Diana as she walked toward him. Although she had not recognized her first love due to the separation of many years, she had grown into a beautiful woman, but still the same headstrong Diana. He was not about to see his childhood sweetheart placed in any more danger than had already occurred. "I'm sorry Miss Palmer, but chasing after mercenary thugs is not work for a woman, it's just too dangerous."
Looking at the Ghost Who Walks with astonishment, Diana raises her voice excitedly: "Excuse me, but I will have you know I'm not just some inexperienced city girl, who frets over whether she has broken a nail, or if her hair gets messed up! I have traveled all over the world, and been to some of the most remote and dangerous areas you could imagine! I've scuba dived shipwrecks, visited silver mines and fought claim jumpers, and..."
The Phantom interrupts Diana and holds his hand up as if he is about to allow Diana to accompany him, and speaks. "I'm sure you are very capable of taking care of yourself Miss Palmer, as evidenced here today with the way you handle a rifle and pistol against machine guns, but... it would be best if you stayed behind."
Diana Palmer's face turns red with frustration, as the Phantom turns his back to her and continues to mount his horse. "How dare you interrupt me, and dismiss me like a child, you turn around right this instant, you can't tell me what to do!"
With Diana Palmer at his back, The Phantom says in a low tone "....How about I turn you over my knee and give you a good spanking!"
Diana's face is flushed with anger, "What did you say to me?"
Placing his foot in the stirrup The Phantom slightly turns his head toward her, " ...Hmmmm? Oh have a nice day Miss Palmer."
Diana stomps across the field,"I heard what you said you, you......".

Rushing toward the Phantom, and Hero, Diana suddenly grabs the horses reigns to prevent the Phantom from leaving her behind. Hero startles at Diana's sudden action, he snorts and switches his tail, slowly taking a few steps backward.
"Now wait just a minute, you fast-talking, striped-shorted nut! I appreciate you and the Jungle Patrol coming to the rescue of the expedition crew, my uncle, and myself; but I don't know you from Adam's house cat, and I'll be doggone if I let some so-called jungle legend take off after the relic that uncle Dave and myself had worked so hard to find! I'm not about to just wait and see whether you actually return with the idol, so I'm coming with you whether you like it or not!" The Phantom continues to settle into Hero's saddle, seemingly ignoring Diana's comments.

Leaning forward in Hero's saddle, The Phantom attempts to stress to Diana the dangerous situation she would be putting herself in if she went with him after Eichmann and the idol. The Phantom tries once more to reason with Diana. "Miss Palmer......"
Jerking hard on the reigns of Hero, Diana takes offense to being called 'Miss', as if she were a schoolgirl, and interrupts The Phantom.
"Diana, if you please!" Smiling, The Phantom continues, "Diana, If you went with me, I could not guarantee your safety! I have dealt with Eichmann before, and he has no qualms about shooting a woman if he has to. All that matters to him is money, nothing else!" Leaning forward on Hero, the Phantom looks into Diana's eyes, and very quietly and seriously continues: "...I said, let go of the reigns... NOW!"
Sternly Diana looks up at the Phantom meeting his eyes as well, not blinking, she is determined to have her way no matter what, but something about him at this moment frightens her. Who is this man to tell her no, she thinks to herself. Even if he is the Famed "Ghost Who Walks", how does she know he won't just keep the treasure for himself "Well, I'm going with you whether you like it or not, and you can't stop me. This find is far too important to Uncle Dave, the Newspaper, and the Museum of African history."
Dave Palmer, shaking his head, interjects to the Phantom, "Now you see what I go through day in and day out!"

Walking quickly over to Diana, and getting between her and the Phantom, "Listen Diana, if he says it's dangerous, it's dangerous, you have seen what these men were willing to do,....kill for a small amount of money, to them life means nothing!"
Tilting her head, and placing her hands on her hips, Diana continues to argue, "Uncle Dave, you know I have been in situations like this before, and I know how to handle myself."
Turning, and walking over to the Phantom, Uncle Dave asks the Phantom, "If she went with you, could you guarantee her safety?"
The Phantom is silent for a moment, then speaks "There is no guarantee in life, there is no promise of tomorrow for any of us, but I will do my best to protect her if she accompanies me,... the man we seek will not hesitate to kill!"
Diana and Uncle Dave look at each other, as Colonel Worbu walks up, "I did not mean to eavesdrop, but if Miss Palmer wishes, she may take my horse to accompany Ghost Who Walks, I will ride back to headquarters with my men in the truck, she can return the horse later at the post!".
Taking the reigns from The jungle Patrol Colonel, Diana looks back at Uncle Dave, "Thank you Colonel Worbu, I will take good care of him I promise!"
Uncle Dave looks at the Phantom, "...Well, I guess that argument has been decided!"

Laughing, and shaking his head once again, Uncle Dave chuckle's as he walks toward his stubborn, and headstrong niece, and the Phantom. "Here Diana, take my 9mm Luger, and the extra magazines, you have used up your .45 Colt ammo." Diana looks up at her uncle Dave, "Thanks Uncle Dave, I hope I won't need to use it though" The Phantom steps to the side while Uncle Dave converses with his niece. ".....Well it appears I'm going to have to take you along whether I like it or not Miss Palmer, Colonel Worubu has been kind enough to lend you his horse!" The Phantom looks at Colonel Worubu, and rolls his eyes, as Worubu gives the Phantom a big grin, and shrugs his shoulders.

Pulling Diana close to him, Dave Palmer wonders if this will be the last time he sees his overly adventurous niece, and wonders if he has made the right decision to allow her to leave with this mysterious fellow who came to their rescue. ".....Listen Diana,....I know I cannot stop you from going, but please be careful! Even though you are my niece, I've always loved you like a daughter since your parents passed away, so come back to me safely, the idol is not worth your life!"
Smiling up to Dave, Diana remarks to her Uncle, " Don't worry Uncle Dave, if it does get too dangerous, I will turn back, besides I have the protection of....um....Mr. Phantom here!" Motioning over her shoulder with her thumb towards the Ghost Who Walks, Diana gives a big smile to the Phantom.
".....If we are going to catch Eichmann...." Remarks The Phantom "We had better leave now, he has a good jump on us, and I have no idea whether he is familiar with the trail leading to the temple or not!" The Phantom runs towards Hero, and in one leap lands in the saddle, Diana scrambling into the saddle of Colonel Worubu's horse, she remarks, "Temple?"

As the pair ride their horses toward the old Japanese temple, Diana smiling, looks over at the Phantom. "....So." The Phantom turning his head slightly toward her, answering, "...So????" Diana continues her mischievous smile "Well, you never answered my earlier question; do you sleep in that costume? Frowning, the Phantom responds to her "...Ah, no I do not." Chuckling, Diana continues, "Well, I mean you have to admit, it is a rather outlandish costume, wouldn't you say?" Turning once again very seriously to Diana"Actually, no it is not. The color is almost impossible to see in low light, and in wooded or jungle areas it blends in with the shadows. Besides the Phantom has worn this for hundreds of years, I'm not about to change now. Looking curiously at the Phantom, Diana narrows her eyes at him, "....Ah,.....did you say hundreds of years? You can't possibly mean that you really expect me to believe that you are hundreds of years old do you? Not looking at Diana, and ignoring the question,The Phantom continues, "It is tradition, and the Bandar people know and recognize me in this form". The Phantom turns his head back to the trail, looking toward the ground on either side of Hero, searching for tracks left behind by Eichmann.
Not looking at Diana, the Phantom comments to her slightly smiling, "....I'm glad you find my uniform so.....amusing.....Miss Palmer." The Phantom makes a clicking noise with his mouth, indicating to Hero to pick up the pace, Diana shakes her head, and spurs her horse to pick up the pace as well.
As the two riders approach the end of the trail, they are met by the ruins of a long dead city. "Well, this looks like it's the end of the line as far as the horses go, we will have to travel the rest of the way on foot!" As they dismount their horses, Diana remarks, "Will they be safe here?", the Phantom begins to tie Hero to a small tree, and glances around the silent forest surroundings. "Yes, I don't think anyone will venture into this area, besides this is headhunter country, and the Bandar tribe know my horse!" Diana quickly looks around her, "....Are you serious? .....Really,...headhunters? Do you think some of them might be watching us right now? The Phantom laughs, "Don't worry Miss Palmer, the Bandar are my people, and never cook anyone and eat them unless they check with me first... besides, you would only be an appetizer for them, as little as you are!" Looking up at Diana, she has a serious stare at the Phantom, "...I'm just kidding Miss Palmer." Smiling, The Phantom begins the ascent up the stairs of the old ruins, Diana remarks, "...Haha, you're a real funny guy!"

As the Phantom, and Diana cautiously ascend the stairs of the old temple ruins, they are ever mindful that Eichmann could be watching their every step. Every noise causes them to pause before continuing on their quest. Whispering softly, Diana tells the Phantom, "Do you think he will try to jump us along the way?" The Phantom was ascending the steps above Diana, looking in all directions, and examining the disturbed foreground. "No, I think he has a schedule to keep, and knowing Eichmann, he likes to be in and out of the area as fast as possible to avoid capture. He has slipped away from me on quite a few occasions, all over the world, and I'm planning on catching him red handed this time!" Diana looks down at the archaic steps as they ascend to the top of the ruins, Diana thinks to herself how wonderful it would have been to have seen the structure as it was originally built so long ago, but now all that remains is a small remnant of what used to be a city, now long gone and almost consumed by the jungle!

As the Phantom reaches the top of the cliff, he quickly whirls around to help safeguard Diana, as she is cautiously finding hand, and footholds in the jagged rock facing leading to the path to the temple. "Don't worry Diana, I've got you, just push with your feet, and stay close to the rocks you are almost there" Glancing over her right shoulder, Diana looks to see how dangerously high they are. For a moment Diana wishes they had taken the road to the temple, but she knew if they had, it quite possibly would be guarded by hired thugs. "I have climbed tougher cliffs before,......but, I am glad you are here to help me, I would hate to slip and fall from this height, I don't think I would survive the fall."

"I have you, just hold onto me and I will pull you away from the edge." Looking over the flora, and shoulder Diana breathes a sigh of relief as they steady themselves after the harrowing climb. She had not realized exactly just how much out of the way they were having to go to out maneuver Eichmann. Looking about her, she realizes just how far from her Uncle she and the Phantom were. A chill runs down her spine as she looks out over the flora, and fauna of the majestic jungle sprawling beneath them.

As The Phantom, and Diana look down at the dizzying height they had just climbed, Diana licks her lips nervously, as she concentrates on stepping away from the edge of the cliff. Just days ago, she was on a routine archeological dig, and now she was scrambling through the jungle with what is regarded by the local headhunters, and the inhabitants of this region, a vengeful demon god in the form of a man. "Thank you for your help".
Looking about them they study the hand carved stone steps, and vine covered wooden hand railings. Motioning to the path to the right, the Phantom springs up the moss covered steps beckoning Diana to follow. "It has been awhile, but I remember the way now, I think we made up for time by climbing the cliff path." Diana looking about her, placing her hands on her hips comments, "This place is utterly amazing, it is so beautiful here, it's a shame we could not take more time to enjoy the scenery! Why did the Japanese priests build a temple in such a remote area, and then abandon it?" As they make their way along the hilly path the Phantom turns, stopping briefly to catch his breath, "Actually it is not abandoned, the priests return from time to time during the year to do upkeep on the temple. By returning to clean and restore the temple, they find it a refreshing of their souls when they renew the temple. I just hope they are not here now, I would hate to deal with a possible hostage situation!"

Studying the dried stream bed,
Diana ponders why there is the lack of water for such a fertile
area.
Cautiously whispering, she begins to speak, "You were right about the stream being dry this time of year Phantom, at least it does cover the sound of our footsteps in the underbrush." Dried leaves and twigs from the trees litter the stream bed, as small frogs, and lizards scurry across the smooth rock surface disturbed by the sudden appearance of The Phantom, and Diana.

The Phantom warily eyes the ridges above them in the river bed, not knowing to what extent the mercenaries have planned out this attack, hoping this was a hastily planned attack to gain riches, and not a well thought out plan by someone. Speaking in hushed tones, The Phantom, and Diana discuss their plans, "From this point on we will need to be very quiet, I just hope we still have the element of surprise Diana."

As The Phantom and Diana step onto the large bluff overlooking the jungle floor, they scan the area for any signs of movement. Speaking quietly the Phantom motions for Diana not to speak, "Do you hear that ?" listening very closely, the pair try to determine where the sound of footfalls crushing leaves, and twigs in the jungle is coming from.
Excitedly, Diana points to the right, and whispers to the Phantom, "Look! there he is, you were right about him heading this way." Eichmann was hurriedly running down an embankment to a well worn path, that have used by priests from the temple over the many years.
With a wink and an approving smile the Phantom whispers back to Diana, "Excellent! you have the eye sight of a jungle cat Diana."
Smiling with the satisfaction of seeing the treacherous Eichmann, Diana turns to the Phantom, "Let's grab this guy, and punch his lights out! ....Oh and by the way,......I want the first swing at this guy's jaw!"
Laughing quietly, the Phantom responds, "....Please be my guest, just watch out for this guy, he's as slippery as an eel!"

Emerging onto a small bluff with a clearing, the Phantom points out to Diana where the Japanese monastery is located.
"look there to the right Diana, you can see the red paint of the pagoda entrance to the temple!" Suddenly an explosion of sound above them breaks the silence of the jungle. Seconds later they realize it is a small helicopter as the wind from the blades causes leaves and small branches to rain down on them. Circling the top of the trees the small craft makes it's way toward the temple searching for a landing spot. Diana squinting into the sunlight trying to make out the helicopter, turns to the Phantom. "...And I bet that is his ride out of here with our treasure! You were right, he was trying to make a deadline to make his delivery to whom ever it was that hired him, and those thugs from earlier!"

Edging toward the entrance of the Japanese temple doors, The phantom, and Diana ready themselves for whatever they may find on the other side of the walls. Whispering in a low tone to the Phantom: "I can only see a man and a woman standing guard, and they are heavily armed, they are distracted by chatting and smoking cigarettes!"
Whispering back to Diana the Phantom remarks: "......Hmmm, obviously they think no one followed Eichmann, and they believe they have nothing to worry about, .....their mistake!" Diana starts to rush the door, and the Phantom grabs her arm, "Wait",
Diana looking back over her shoulder at her mysterious companion, whispers "....What is it?"
The Phantom, peering around the corner at the guards, whispers to Diana, "Try not to kill any of them, wound them at the most, I want them all to stand trial".
Looking at the Phantom puzzled, and bewildered whispers back to him, "....Are you crazy?....These people are killers, why they would shoot your grandmother just to get her gold teeth out of her head!".
The Phantom whispers back to Diana, "Well, first of all, I don't have a grandmother, nevertheless, I want to avoid killing someone unless it absolutely necessary!
Rolling her eyes, whispering, Diana reluctantly agrees, "O.K. we'll do it your way, but I won't make any promises Phantom!"

As Eichmann passes the guards on duty, he hears a familiar voice, "Eichmann, over here to your right!". Taking the path to the right , Eichmann sees his newest employer waiting for him by the bridge. An athletic, dark skinned woman stood before him, dressed in tight fitting black clothing and a black jacket and boots. Her deep reddish brown hair and olive complexion offset the dark clothing she wore. "Well, you made excellent time Se·ñor Eichmann, we just arrived here moments ago,.....I want to be in the air before the storm arrives,.....do you have the "package" ?"
As Eichmann approached the bridge, the gravel from the path crunched under his feet. Normally the sound of running water from the stream would have covered his footfalls, but it had not rained in a week, and the stream bed was essentially dry. "Ja, I have the item you requested Contessa!".
With a large smile, the woman extended her hand, "Excellent, excellent! Did you have any trouble obtaining this from the Palmers? I'm sure they were not too happy to part with their newly found acquisition."
Pulling his cap down, Eichmann replied, "....Well, they were not exactly und problem,.....unfortunately und Jungle Patrol showed up sooner than I expected, und....someone else!"
Cutting her eyes at Eichmann, she replied, "......Who else.....?"
With a sneer, Eichmann hissed the name to the Contessa, "........Der Gespenst, Geist, der spazieren geht!" (The Phantom, Ghost who walks!)
The Contessa's eyes widened at the very mention of his name, "Que? El Fantasma!!!" (What? The Phantom?), turning on her heel, she shouted a command to the helicopter pilot, "Start the engine, we leave now!!!"
The whir of helicopter blades, and the start of the helicopter motor reaches the Phantom, and Diana's ears. "Sounds like someone is about to leave,....and with my artifact!"
Agreeing with Diana, the Phantom speaks, "...Yes, I'm afraid stealth is no longer a requirement for us now Diana, let's get ready to rush the gate!"

The Phantom speaks in a hushed tone, "On the count of three we rush the gate, you ready? Diana nods her head in agreement, "One,....Two....Three!!!!"
Diana is the first to bound through the door, followed by the Phantom, the astonished guards freeze in their tracks momentarily oat the sight of the sudden appearance of Phantom, and Diana. "What the..." exclaims the male mercenary, as the two soldiers drop their cigarettes and lighter, fumbling for their weapons. Multiple shots ring out as the Phantom and Diana fire their weapons aiming at the sentries machine guns, shooting them from their hands.
"Good shooting Diana!"
As The Phantom and Diana hurdle over the fallen mercenaries, Diana winks at the Phantom, "Phantom, perhaps we should have a shooting match one day to see who the better shot is!"
The Phantom smiles, "I would like that very much Miss Palmer." The Phantom thinks to himself that the headstrong girl he knew as a child was still as stubborn as ever, except growing into a woman.
The sound of gunshots ring out from the sentry area, causing Eichmann to whirl around cocking his machine gun, "Vas ist los?". The Contessa turning as well, her heart jumping, this was not good that shots were fired, a sound that chilled the Contessa's blood. "Eichmann, prepare to leave,......NOW!!!

"Drop the weapons, and the idol you two, you are coming with us to Jungle Patrol headquarters! "

Dropping the pouch to the bridge Eichmann laughs"Ha Ha! I don't think so my mysterious friend, you see I have heard the stories about you, and we are about to find out if there is any truth to the legend "Er, der nicht sterben kann!" ( He who cannot die! ).
"Be careful Eichmann, greater men than you have tried to kill me, and I keep coming back until I bring them to justice!"

Suddenly, the Phantom and Diana lunge toward the two thieves, Diana reaching her quarry first, grabs the Contessa's extended arm with the pistol, and collar of her jacket. Suddenly, out of the corner of her eye, Diana sees Eichmann's machine gun barrel flash with fire as it chatter's away, deafening her for a split second. Realizing the Phantom has been hit, and is falling almost as it were in slow motion, Diana knows that she will be next if she does not move fast. Praying that the Phantom is not mortally wounded, she sees the Phantom crouched holding his shoulder

Wasting no time, Diana sucker punches the Contessa, and draws her Luger before Eichmann can get a clear shot at her with the machine gun. Diana manages to pop off two rounds into Eichmann as he is swinging his machine gun toward her, almost immediately Eichmann drops to the bridge without a sound, like a puppet whose strings had just been cut by it's master. "Phantom, are you alright?".
Staggering to his feet, dizzily, the Phantom steady's himself against the bridge, removing his blood soaked hand from his wounded shoulder, and quickly pulling one of his automatics. "Yes, I'm....alright,....just grab the pouch, and let's go ....quickly!" The Phantom knows he will not be able to fight long at the rate blood is flowing from his shoulder. Bullets begin to pepper the bridge, and trees, as the Phantom and Diana turn, and realize the guards have recovered and are now on the advance toward their position.

As Diana grabs the Idol, the Phantom opens fire toward the guards who have recovered their machine guns and have begun to return fire in their direction. the Contessa scrambling back up to her feet after Diana's round house punch reaches out to Eichmann, "Señor Eichmann, has that little tramp killed you?"... Eichmann lying on the bridge propped up against a railing with his shoulder bleeding, turns toward the Contessa, and extends the Machine gun towards her."Agghhhh, Contessa nehmen das Maschinengewehr und töten sie!" (...Agghhhh, Contessa take the machine gun and kill them!)
Grabbing the machine gun from Eichman she snaps in a new magazine, and pulls the cocking lever back leveling the weapon at The Phantom, and Diana. Diana upon seeing the Contessa about to shoot them, cries out to the Phantom "Phantom, look out she has the machine gun", diving for cover on their respective sides of the bridge, bullets chip the wood from the railings of the bridge, and the surrounding rocks.

A blast of gunfire errupts from the MP40 as the Contessa fires a random set of bursts from the machine gun. The Phantom and Diana dive for cover so as not to be hit by the wild firing Contessa. "Fantasma, you will not take what is mine, return the idol, and I may let the two of you live, ....if not today you DIE!"
Suddenly the chatter of machine gun fire stops as the magazine to the Schmeisser mp40 empty's of bullets, and the Contessa begins to reload a new magazine. Diana having taken cover behind a rock seizes the opportunity to rush the Contessa, looking up at the last second the Contessa throws her arm up to block the swing from Diana. Thrown off balance, Diana crashes into the Contessa and they both fall over the railing of the bridge to the dry stream bed below!

The Contessa rolls away quickly like a cat leaping to her feet, as she grabs the recovering Diana by the hair and slams her face into the support of the bridge repeatedly! "Little girl I have had enough of you! I'm going to load your carcass into the helicopter throw you out at a hundred feet you little pest!!!"
Suddenly, Diana throws both her hands forward, grabbing the support of the bridge to stop her head from going slamming into the post again. Diana rams her left elbow into the Contessa's stomach, causing her to stagger backward.
"Hurry Diana, we have to go!" , shouts the Phantom, as he reaches down to Eichmann's belt and grabs a hand grenade. "This will buy us a few seconds, but a few seconds only girl!!"
The Phantom pulls the pin on the hand grenade and sails it through the air towards the guards, sending them running for cover! As the Contessa rares back to punch Diana, the last thing she sees is Diana's fist as she throws a roundhouse punch connecting with the Contessa's chin knocking her backwards over the rocks! An explosion rocks the temple, sending rocks, dirt, and wood flying in all directions, as Diana, and the Phantom are making a hasty exit from the Contessa, and her men.

Bullets began to ricochet, and tear into the walls, and door of the temple as the Phantom and Diana make their exit. The Phantom laughs, "Well this did not go as smoothly as I thought it would, I think a hasty exit is in order wouldn't you agree my dear?"
Grabbing the waist of the Phantom to help him through the doorway, Diana gives him a strange look, "Seriously, Phantom this cannot be a normal day for you.....right?"
Laughing the Phantom responds, "....Yes, normal for me!" Diana, firing in different directions, pulls the phantom through the doorway, and the pair sprint down the gravel path towards a large outcropping of rocks, and trees. "I sould have known you would say that!" Bullets ricochet off the Temple torii entrance gateway, "Watch the pilot of the helicopter, he's joined in to the shooting gallery as well it seems."
Shots ring out from every direction, unfortunately, the Phantom thinks to himself, this group is much more trained in the art of shooting than the one's Diana and the Phantom had previously encountered earlier in the day!

The Contessa crawls up from the dried river bed dusting herself off, recovering Eichmann's machine gun, although the Phantom, and Diana have fled the scene, the Contessa screams out as she sprays the area with bullets. "After them, kill them, and bring me the idol fools!" Two of the mercenaries had already begun the chase after Diana and the Phantom, pausing only to look at the blood left behind from the wound of the Phantom.

The Phantom, and Diana pause a moment to return fire, and get their bearings for an exit from the temple grounds. ".....Phantom, next time you tell me to wound someone I'm gonna ignore you, now they're after us with machine guns, you're bleeding all over the place and we're running out of bullets!!".
The Phantom and Diana sprint back up the hill attempting to retrace their steps from their ascent up the cliff side of the old temple grounds. Exhausted from his wounds the Phantom begins to slow his pace, "You may have to go on without me, I'm beginning to see spots, and may pass out at any moment!" Stopping to bend over, the Phantom struggles to keep from passing out.

Diana stops to give cover fire, while attempting to put pressure on the Phantom's wounds. "Phantom, we are almost to the horses, just don't pass out!" The Phantom looking over his shoulder in the direction of running footsteps getting closer by the second knows they do not have much time.
" Don't worry about me, if I go down, run as fast as you can to the horses, and get back to Jungle Patrol headquarters, they will know what to do!" Hearing the fast approaching footsteps of the mercenary guards running at full speed over the crest of the hill, The Phantom, and Diana realize they must make a stand here, and now if they are to gain the advantage over their pursuers. Out of breath, Diana tries to hold the Phantom upright, as he is about to pass out from blood loss, ".....You're not going to like this Phantom, but we have no choice, they are going to kill us, and you are in no shape to fight, so I'm going to do what I have to go get us out of this situation!"

"There they are, open fire on the devils!" Bullets rip through the jungle, splattering against the bark of trees, and piercing foliage all around The Phantom and Diana. The mercenaries realize that from their angle, they do not have a clear shot of their quarry, and proceed to run up the hill toward their targets, this time they will not fail to kill the Phantom or Diana Palmer!

Quickly, Diana reaches for one of The Phantom's Colt automatic pistols and checks the clip. "Last seven rounds, I better make them count!" Using the Phantom's back to steady her aim, Diana prepares for the mercenaries as they are about to reach the top of the hill.

As the two mercenary's reach the top of the crest, they both cut loose with a flurry of machine gun fire spraying it wildly, at the duo. Tree bark, dirt and leaves from behind them, fly into the air. As the bullets barely miss Diana, and The Ghost Who Walks, Diana opens fire with her Luger, and the Phantom's Colt .45 automatics. The sound of gunfire is deafening as the Phantom struggles to remain conscious from the loss of blood. He is barely aware as Diana struggles to keep him upright, and return fire at the same time. In a blinding flash of gunfire, Diana's bullets strike home. "Agggghhhhh" cries the male mercenary, as the hail of bullets rip into his chest, causing him to stumble, then dropping to the ground at his companions feet. Astonished that Diana had struck her target from so far away, the female mercenary continues to return fire in the direction of the Phantom, and Diana.
Photo and fx by Magestiq
"Madre De Dios, she shoots like a devil!" remarks the female mercenary. No sooner had the words left the female mercenary's lips, Diana's bullets strike repeatedly in her torso, and she slumps to the ground, her finger still on the trigger of her HK machine gun, her own bullets tear into the ground before her, causing a cloud of dust to fly into the air, and then.......silence.
Diana grabs the Phantom, and shakes him violently, "Hey, come on now, you have got to stand up, you are too heavy for me to carry, it's all I can do to hold half of your weight up!" The Phantom begins to straighten up, as Diana helps keep him steady. In the distance the sound of a helicopter lifting off, and flying away gives a sense of relief to the pair as they make their way down the rocky dry waterbed they had previously climbed an hour before.
"We are not far from the horses now Diana". The Phantom almost in a sprint, scrambling up the old stone steps that were part of an ancient ruin, turns to Diana, "When we get to my horse, I may pass out, just steady me in the saddle so I won't fall off!". Panting, and constantly looking over her shoulder as they make their way toward the horses Diana replies, "Don't worry if I have to I'll tie you to the saddle, who knows if we are being followed or not!".
As the pair reach the horses, the Phantom looks, and listens intently as Diana helps the Phantom place his foot in the stirrups of Hero. "I do not think we are followed, I believe the Contessa, and Eichmann have had enough for today, the helicopter left rather quickly after the gunfire ceased, I think they cut their losses and escaped while they could!"
As Diana finally is able to shove the Phantom into the saddle, she hands the reigns to him and speaks, "....So you know this woman,.....this "Contessa"? The Phantom shaking his head, "No, only by reputation, I recognized her ring, a custom silver skull ring with diamonds inlaid on the surface, and I knew Eichmann had recent dealings with her according to Interpol reports I have gathered."
After what seemed like an eternity, the pair finally reach the horses, and begin to mount them for the journey back to Jungle Headquarters.

Meanwhile from Jungle headquarters, Dave Palmer as well as Colonel Worubu and the rest of the patrolmen for the last half hour, have heard explosions, and random gunfire from the jungle in the distance. Pacing in front of the officer's mess hall, and nervously rubbing his hands, Dave looks up to a serious faced Colonel Worubu. "I never should have let her go,.......after hearing all that gunfire,.....she always was a headstrong girl, but I never should have let her go this time, if anything happens to her it will be my fault." Hands on his hips, Dave Palmer stares at the ground.
Colonel Worubu walks over to Dave Palmer, and tries to cheer him up, "Do not worry my friend, I believe the Phantom will protect your Niece, he has faced many dangers in the jungle before, and he places life higher than any treasure! Besides, I learned a long time ago, You cannot change a woman's mind, just as I cannot change the direction of the wind!"
Colonel Worubu laughs, and Pats Uncle Dave on the back, "Come and sit, I will prepare us a cool drink and something to eat while we await their return." The Colonel ascends the steps leading to the officers mess hall, and calls out to the cook to prepare two plates for himself, and Uncle Dave. A few moments later, Colonel Worubu, and another patrolman descend the stairs with food and drink, only to find uncle Dave nowhere to be seen. "Where the devil has he gotten to, I just left him here a moment ago?"
Dave Palmer seeing and unattended patrolman horse, mounted it and took the opportunity to trot down the trail leading toward where he last left Diana and the Phantom. Dave at least would feel better doing something than nothing, it was better than just sitting and waiting.

Diana steers her mount close to the Phantom's horse to keep him from falling off Hero. " Don't worry, I will try to keep you from falling!" The Phantom straightens himself up in his saddle, feeling the dizziness leave him from the loss of blood.
"Thank you Diana, I believe the dizzy spell has passed, and the wound seems to have stopped bleeding for the time being." Diana placing her hand on the Phantom's shoulder, begins to back her mount away slowly from the Phantom's horse, "Well, all the same I think we should quicken the pace to get back to Jungle Patrol head quarter's,....no offense Phantom , but your jungle is kind of freaking me out, I feel like we are being watched"!
As Diana begins to look behind her, and all around as they ride down the trail, the Phantom smiles, " You have good instincts Diana, we are being watched, and have been since we first ventured into "Deep Woods", the Bandar only allow you to see them when they wish you to, they have been watching our backs for us since we arrived back at our horses."
Twisting in her saddle, looking over her right shoulder, then back at the Phantom, Diana smiles, "Thanks for the heads up "O Ghost Who Keeps Things To Himself", laughing the Phantom makes a clicking sound with his mouth and spurs Hero on to a quicker pace, with Diana following suit.

Dave Palmer, upon hearing the approaching horses on the trail, has no idea who it is, dismounts his horse and ties the reigns to a small tree. Dave hopes and prays it is his Niece, and the Phantom, but just in case, he pulls his Bergman pistol, and snaps off the safety. Just as the horses arrive at Dave's position, he plunges through the underbrush, "...Hold it right there,......." Slightly spooking the horses, they neigh and rare up on their hind legs. "Diana, ....Phantom, Thank God your are both alright, I was worried something happend to you both!!!" Diana leaping from her horse, runs to uncle Dave, and wraps her arms around his neck, " Uncle Dave, you just cannot imagine the adventure we both have been on, people have shot at us, we got the idol, Phantom is wounded, he needs medical attention, there are head hunters watching us from the bushes,......." Grabbing both of Diana's shoulders, Dave tries to calm his niece, "Slow down girl,.....now what's this about you being shot Phantom? The Phantom had already dismounted and was walking toward the Jungle patrol entrance leading Hero a few hundred feet away. "I am fine Dave Palmer, I just need to get back to my people, they will tend to my wounds, they are very close by." Dave Palmer looks around the jungle surrounding him, " You mean to say they are here watching us right now? I don't see anyone." Diana patting Uncle Dave on the back, and handing him the recovered idol, smiles and looks around at the jungle herself, "Yep, they are here alright, I have caught glimpses of the sneaking through the underbrush, Phantom says we are o.k. though, they know we are friends!" Uncle Dave turning his attention to the Inca idol in the pouch, smiles and looks up at the Phantom, "You have our gratitude for recovering this for us Phantom, you have no idea what significant historical evidence this plays in the part of Africa's as well as Mexico's history!" The three began to walk toward the Jungle Patrol fort, as the gate swings open for Colonel Worubu as he comes to meet his friends, with two patrolmen.

Dave Palmer explains to The Phantom the significance of the small idol found at the site. " This evidence confirms what I have always believed,.....a Spaniard named Juan Cortez, who was an officer in the Spanish army, stole this from an Inca gold shipment that was being transported from Mexico, back to Spain when Francisco Pizarro raided parts of the Inca empire. Reports had always been rumored that Cortez had fled to Africa with his stolen gold, where he had a hidden fortress heavy laden with stolen gold and silver."
Uncle Dave continues,"Once the treasure manifests were reviewed by Pizarro's men, this idol, along with other articles were found missing. Thankfully the Spanish were very descriptive of their treasures, and even did drawings of many of the items such as this one."
Uncle Dave continues,"Once the treasure manifests were reviewed by Pizarro's men, this idol, along with other articles were found missing. Thankfully the Spanish were very descriptive of their treasures, and even did drawings of many of the items such as this one."
The Phantom interjects, "that would explain the ruins of the castle on the cliffs not far from here being named 'el Castillo del Comandante Perdido', ("The Castle of the Lost Commander").
Nodding his head, Uncle Dave finishes the story, "Yes, and Cortez's wrecked ship was found less than half a mile from here on the beach. Reports from that era indicated that a terrible storm hit this coast at that time, and Cortez was never heard from again. I had always suspected that he tried to make it home on foot with his Inca treasure, leaving his men to fend for themselves.
"From the near complete skeleton, armor and weapons we found at the site he survived, gathered what he could carry with him wealth wise, and tried to make his way through the jungle to his castle .......unsuccessfully I might add!"
The Phantom laughed, "....And another greedy man who covets material, earthly wealth does himself in once again, a story that never seems to end for evil men. The Phantom turns toward Diana, "....Well as much as I would like to stay and chat, I must attend to my wound." Colonel Worubu interrupts, "Friend Phantom, we have medicine here would you like....." But before Colonel Worubu can finish his sentence The Phantom holds his hand up and speaks, "Thank you old friend, but no I will be fine, if i do need assistance, i will send you help though."
Colonel Worbu walks up, as Diana hands the reigns of the Colonel's horse to him. "Just as I promised, not a scratch on her Colonel!" taking the reigns, Colonel Worubu looks at the Phantoms wounded arm, "Phantom, you are bleeding, please let my surgeon attend your wound, great one!"
Diana runs towards the Phantom, "Why don't you let the Jungle Patrol look after your arm, you have lost a lot of blood you may need a transfusion!" Smiling at Diana, he removes his hand from the injured arm, and squeezes her hand and smiles. "Thank you for your concern miss Palmer, but I will be fine, besides my people are waiting for me there at the edge of the jungle, they will take care of me." Looking, and squinting her eyes at the vast jungle surrounding the JunglePatrol fort, Diana could not see anyone at all. Dave Palmer shakes his head "I still don't see anyone there, ...is he pulling our leg??"

Uncle Dave, and Diana wave farewell to the "Ghost Who Walks", as he returns to the Skull cave, to recuperate from his bullet wounds. "Uncle Dave, why did he go to the lengths to help us the way he did? He does not even know us, and he risked his life to help us recover the idol, he had no stake in any of this,......why did he do it??!" Uncle Dave shook his head and smiled, "Well, he is living proof that there are still some men in this world that do things for others without the chance for profit, gain, or fame. I believe this jungle legend lives up to his reputation as protector of this strange region of Bangalla, and thankfully for our sakes he did!" The sound of thunder has become louder, and the temperature drops quickly as the storm is almost on top of them

Diana's eyes begins to tear up, as she watches the injured, mysterious Phantom as he makes his way toward Hero, his mount. Fighting back tears as the Phantom struggles to pull himself up into his saddle, she turns to her uncle. "Uncle Dave, can't you stop him, he's in a very bad way, he's in no shape to ride a horse!" Uncle Dave watches the Phantom secures the horse's saddle, "I tried to persuade him, but he was insistent on returning to the Bandar, he said he is in very capable hands with them, and not to worry!" Natives begin to appear out of the jungles edge, and fill the trail, where they had just traveled upon. There were so many Bandar there were more than the naked eye could count, armed with bows, spears, and what appeared to be short swords in sheaths at their sides.

As the Phantom mounts Hero his horse, he turns for a final farewell wave to Diana, and her Uncle. Pausing for a lingering moment to look one last time at his childhood love, he then turns his horse slowly, and begins his return to the Skull cave. A deafening clap of thunder shakes the wooden bridge under the feet of the Palmer's, as the rain sets in, almost eeriely signaling the exit of The Phantom. Diana, and Uncle Dave wave goodbye one last time as the stark whiteness of hero, and the Phantom's purple costume, as well as the natives slowly disappearing into the enveloping green jungle of the "Deep Woods". They both are gone as suddenly as they had appeared earlier in the day. One last native stood in the clearing, he was short of stature, with a hat made of grass leaves carrying a small .30 carbine. He raised his arm and began to wave goodbye, then suddenly trotted off to the jungle and disappeared as well.
" I can't believe he's gone! It's almost as if he was never really here, it was such a surreal thing!" Laughing, Uncle Dave responds, "Yeah, it's not every day you team up with a man dressed in purple to recover a lost artifact for the museum!" Smiling, Diana gives her uncle a puzzled look, ".......You know Uncle Dave,......I can't seem to put my finger on it, but he seems so familiar to me, almost as if we had met before. But that is impossible, this is the first time we have ever visited this region." Uncle Dave rubs Diana's shoulder, and laughs, "Well, at least you will have a story for your grandchildren, among all the other crazy situations you have gotten yourself into over the years, that is.....if we can ever marry you off!

Disappointed that the "Ghost Who Walks", was now gone, sadness returns to Diana. "Do you think we will ever see him again Uncle Dave?" Chuckling, Uncle Dave responds, "Oh, I don't think we have seen the last of our new found mysterious friend. Somehow I believe our paths will cross again, for some reason! He seemed quite taken with you! " Sighing, Diana sadly responds, " I wish he would have stayed longer with us! He just popped into our lives like a lightning bolt, and like a lightning bolt he is gone again, hopping on his horse and riding off into the jungle! After the last few weeks here in Bangalla, and my wild adventure today, life will seem a little dull when we return home! I wish I could stay here and learn more about this "Ghost Who Walks"!
Uncle Dave hugs Diana, and laughs. "Diana,......the jungle is a dangerous place, and a man like this is not for you I'm afraid. I know you have new found feelings for this "Phantom", but trust me, once we get back stateside, and some time has passed you will realize you need a more stable man in your life. It would be hard for a man like that to give up his ways.!"
Diana shrugs her shoulders, and nods her head in reluctant agreement. Uncle Dave turns Diana towards him, and laughs, "Come on kid, lets get out of this rain and get some supper, I think you and I have had enough adventure to last us a lifetime after this!"

As Diana and Uncle Dave turn away and leave the outpost, Diana glances over her shoulder one last time at the encompassing jungle that seemed to swallow the mysterious Phantom, where he disappeared into the forest. She thinks to herself that it almost seems as if it was all just a dream and never really happend, such a surreal event. she thinks also she will never see this strange man who suddenly came into her life, and has quickly now vanished,....perhaps what the legend says about him is true after all maybe he is a ghost,....a ghost who walks among the world of men.

The next morning Diana and Uncle Dave have stopped by to see President Luaga at the capital. As they enter the office are, they are greeted by President Luaga himself.
"My friends, I am so glad you are both safe and sound, and the country of Bangalla thanks you for your magnificent find, and donation!" Shaking both of their hands, President looks at Diana, "I also hear you have met one of our local legends of this region!" Diana
looking at the president excitedly remarks, "....Do you know the Phantom? The Ghost Who Walks as a man? Is he a friend of yours?". Slyly looking at Diana the President turns and smiles at Uncle Dave, "....Diana, your uncle and I have some business to speak of concerning ancient relics, I was wondering...have you seen our lovely garden we have here,....they say there is no garden in all of Africa like the one here in the capital!" Puzzled at the response to her question, Diana looks over her shoulder at the window doors leading into the elevated garden, "....um, not really, ...no." Uncle Dave smiled, "Diana, why don't you take a walk and look at the garden, I'm sure you would find that a whole lot more interesting than stuffy talk about pottery, and ancient scrolls! President Luaga " Yes, and we will come and get you when lunch is served my dear!" Diana walks across the room, pushing the doors leading into the garden open, she instantly smells the wonderful aroma of the many flowers in the garden.
Quietly, President Luaga, and Uncle Dave move towards the doors leading onto the terrace shutting them, "Well Dave, I believe your Diana is about to be in for quite a surprise indeed!" Parting the curtains and peering out the window, Dave remarks, "I can't thank you enough for getting word to your "old friend from the jungle" to stop by and see Diana one last time before we left for the states, she has been talking about him non stop for the last 3 days!"

Diana stepping onto the terrace, is overwhelmed by the beautiful flowers, and trees in the garden, truly President Luaga was right when he said there was no other garden like it in all of Africa! In the distance, Diana could hear the rumbling of thunder, and a cool breeze hits her in the face. The wind reminds her of the day of her meeting of the Phantom for the first time.
Diana leans her back against the railing of the steps leading to the upper terrace overlooking the fountain, and breathes in deep, taking in the aroma of the flowers. Pulling her hair back, and closing her eyes, she smiles to herself thinking of the adventures of the past few days, wishing they could have lasted longer. She opens her eyes, and ascends the stairs leading to the last level of the garden terrace, so she can get a better view of the presidential gardens. Diana walks over to the railing overlooking the fountain and the pond surrounding it and props both her hands on the rail, locking her elbows, and kicking the railing post. Remembering she had some coins in her pocket, she removes the coins and sorts through them singling the largest one. Holding the coin tightly in her clenched fist, she closes her eyes once more, takes a deep breath, smiles, and make a silent wish to her self. Opening her eyes, Diana rares back with her clenched fist, and flings the coin into the pond. As the coin hits the water, Diana lifts her eyes to the the sky looking at the storm clouds gathering overhead, and feels a light dusting of rain on her face. Thunder begins to sound, and the sky flickers with lightning, "Just one last time...." Diana says softly to herself, as the rumbling of thunder slowly fades away.

Diana with her arms resting on the rail, looks down at her boots, and realizes how dusty they were, and begins to rub them on her pants legs. She realizes she had been so preoccupied thinking of the Phantom, and her adventures of the last few days she had forgot to clean her boots. Suddenly a voice from the behind her sounds out, "I've heard of women throwing money away before, but never quite as literally as that Miss Palmer!".
Whirling around, Diana is startled at the voice from behind her, and suddenly realizes who it is!

"PHANTOM!!!!" The Phantom had been standing behind some plants and a column on the upper terrace, when Diana had made her way up the steps. Diana runs toward the Phantom, and gives him a hug, almost knocking him down. "...Owww...", the Phantom winces as the impact of Diana against his body with the hug causes the bullet wound to cause him a sharp pain. "Oh,....I'm sorry, I forgot about your wound, are you alright?" The Phantom laughs, "...Yes,... nothing a few more days rest and relaxation won't fix, by the way, what were you wishing for just now?" Diana putting her hands on her hips smiles at the Phantom, "Now if I told you what I wished for, the wish would not come true now would it, Mr. Nosey of the jungle!" The Phantom laughs, "Well, I suppose you are right!" Diana laughs as well, moving toward the Phantom with her arms extended, "How about another hug, this time not so hard". Thunder echoes loudly through the valley as the two embrace, a fine mist of rain begins to pepper them from the incoming storm. Diana thinks to herself, she is very thankful for her wish coming true, it would have been hard leaving Africa without seeing the Phantom one last time!

"I can't believe you actually came back! How did you know when we were departing Bangalla for the states Phantom? Giving Diana a wry smile, and a wink, the Phantom tells Diana "....Well, you know what they say,.....the Phantom knows all that happens in the jungle,.....and the hearts of beautiful young ladies who catch the eye of the Ghost Who Walks!" Laughing, Diana had hardly noticed that the Phantom had lifted her hand and was slipping a ring upon her ring finger. "Well aren't you the charmer, Mr. Ghost Who sneaks rings on a girls finger! Do you normally hand over rings to girls you have just met, and shared gun battles with?" Laughing the Phantom meets Diana's gaze, and smiles to her. "No, but this is a very special ring, very few are given out to people!"

Looking up into the Phantom's eyes, and back to the ring, Diana feels the warm, large hands holding hers, realizing how much smaller she is compared to the man of mystery standing before her. "It is a very beautiful ring Phantom, what does the design mean?
Smiling at Diana, The Phantom turns the ring towards himself and explains the rings symbol.

Gazing at Diana's hand, the Phantom points to the symbols on the ring, " These are 4 crossed swords Diana, this symbol is my family crest,....and whosoever bears this ring, declares to all who gaze upon it,they know that you are under my protection. To do harm to you or your family is to incur the wrath of The Phantom!.......You are most special to me, and no,.....I do not give out these rings to every girl I share adventures with, you are the first to receive a ring from me". Looking at the Phantom with quizzing eyes, Diana asks, "Um,.....so do you go on adventures with other girls here in the jungle?" Smiling, and with a wink, the phantom responds, "...Well, actually this is everyday for me, and as for adventures with other girls, sometimes yes, but not just here in the jungle, but worldwide." For a split second Diana catches herself feeling jealousy of these other girls who get to spend time with her mystery man, but then reminds herself she has a ring and they do not. Or do they?

Admiring the heavy, but beautiful signet ring given to her, Diana's eyes begin to tear up. "Finally" she thinks to herself, someone I actually care for, and that I have something in common with! For once it was not some boring millionaire playboy that Uncle Dave was trying to set her up a date with, who was more interested in his latest sports car purchase, and checking their stocks in the newspapers! But, she thought to herself, I know nothing of this man, nor who he is!

"Well, thank you very much for the beautiful gift Phantom, and the offer of protection of myself, and my family, but.....". Before Diana could finish her sentence, she felt the Phantom quickly pulling her close to his body, and tipping her backwards. Diana was taken by surprise as The Phantom pressed his lips against hers. Under any other circumstance if a man did this to her without her permission he would have found himself on the floor with a bloody nose, and a bruised ego. Diana did not resist the Phantom's kiss, and if she had any doubts as to whether the mysterious stranger felt the same way as she felt about him, her questions were answered. As the Phantom and Diana finished their kiss, he slowly released his grip, careful to return her to her standing position. Diana shakily speaks, "Well......you certainly don't waste you time do you Phantom?" Smiling the Phantom laughs lightly, "No,.....I don't, besides....life is very short, best to speak your mind and you heart before it's too late!" Taking a deep breath, and exhaling, Diana shakes her head slightly "Well, you spoke very loud and clear that time for sure!

The Phantom upon hearing voices and approaching footsteps from President Luaga's bridge, pivots, and is about to descend the stairs when Diana reaches for his hand. "Wait, it's President Luaga, and Uncle Dave!" she says, smiling at her mystery man, not wanting to let go, "Don't you want to talk to uncle Dave, and the president?" Looking to his left, the Phantom sees his two friends walking toward the balcony from the presidential bridge, "I'm sorry Diana,...... perhaps another time, I must go" Gripping the fingers of the Phantom tightly, Diana lowers her voice to a whisper, "When will I see you again, It's not like you just live down the street, or a couple of hours away you know!" "What's your email address, so I can send you a message, or maybe we can skype!" Puzzled, the Phantom looks at her, and slightly tuns his head not understanding her. "Um,.......what is a skype or email? I'm not really sure what you are talking about." Laughing, Diana responds "Very funny Phantom,...no, really what's your email address? The Phantom shakes his head not understanding what she was meaning. looking at the Phantom Diana remarks, "You are joking right? I mean you do have access to the internet or a computer or laptop right?....... No of course you don't." Laughing Diana shakes her head. "I do have a radio and a tower that enables me to talk to anyone all over the world", remarks the Phantom. Laughing, Diana shakes her head, " Why does that not surprise me?".

As the Phantom mounts Hero, he turns one last time to wave at Diana, and with a smile, the Phantom remarks, " We will see each other again soon Diana, Goodbye!!"
Diana waves goodbye, as the Phantom makes a clicking sound with his mouth, pulls on the reigns to his right, and gallops away on Hero. With a sly grin on her face, Diana regards her new gift from the man of mystery, Diana remarks out loud, "......Yes, somehow I think we will see each other again Phantom, or should I say......Christopher Walker! A girl never forgets her first kiss my mysterious masked friend!"
...........NOT, THE END!
