". . . . . Here you go kid, you can't go wrong with Flash Gordon or the Phantom, .... .......they're the good guys!"

King Features has always been a huge part of my reading life. The first book I ever owned was a copy of "FLASH GORDON and The Fiery Desert of Mongo", which was a Big Little Book from Whitman Publishing! I bought this at a garage sale when I was 7 years old, with 25 cents of my dollar allowance for the month from my mother.
From that time on I always picked up anything King Features I could get my hands on, and would bug my grandparents to read the funnies to me from the newspaper every evening!
Later on, when I found out they had actual comic books from King Features, that featured all my favorites Beetle Baily, Dagwood and Blondie, Prince Valiant, Mandrake the Magician, and of course the mysterious. . . . . Phantom!!!!

". . . . .Hey get away from those monster magazines and go pick out a King feature comic on the spinner rack!"

For any young kid growing up in the 1960's like myself, King Features was always the comics company that all parents agreed on that they wanted their kids to read due to the wholesome nature of the stories, besides...... they grew up reading King Features themselves as kids!
There were always king comics when I went to the barber shop, and it never failed, one kid would be hogging the Phantom or Mandrake, and was not really reading them, so I might or might not ever get to see them again, unless I found one in the second hand bookstores.

"One of these days I gonna see that Phantom movie, he has a dog like me!!"
Tom tyler as "The Phantom", and Rex the wonder dog as "Devil".
There was always something that really appealed to me about the Phantom from King Features more than the other characters. I think it's because he had a dog, and like most kids around the world including myself, our best pal in the world was our dog. Protector, friend, and companion. It would be many years before I was able to finally see the Phantom serial from King Features, all I had ever seen was a worn lobby card with tattered edges I found at a local antique shop.
My Mom . . ."When I was your age , I had a Phantom ring with a secret compartment , I hate that I lost it!". . . . . "me too!!!!"
I have a lot to be grateful to King features for. For all the childhood years of Saturday afternoons reading entertaining comics. The comedy, the soda pops and hot dogs with the gotta read comics at the same time. The adventures that we would re-enact in my Grandparents backyard, and the good values they conveyed in their story lines. When I have children, I will want them to be King Features kids too!
The local Pharmacist: "....Well, son I think you might be in luck! I seem to remember seeing one of those Phantom model kits left in our storeroom, let's take a look!"
"The Phantom and the Voodoo Witch Doctor" model kit copyright 2012 King Features / the Hearst corp., and Revell model kit company.
I no longer have the original model box, as illustrated to the left, or the witch doctor, but I still have the Phantom model that my mom bought for me years ago. I remember seeing the kit at some of the local hobby shops, but they were all bought up quickly by kids. In those days if you did not get the kit when you saw it, you might not get another chance. Thankfully my mom bought it for me even though she did not really have the money at the time, it is now one of my most treasured items from my childhood!
......The box is gone now, and so is the witch doctor, but after all these years I still have my old Phantom model with base, and nameplate, I built and painted. (Pictured left).
....." Hey Grandad, you gotta read the Phantom to me, before I go to bed!"
