Kari Tapio Leppänen
Kari Tapio Leppänen has been working on the Phantom comics for the Swedish Fantomen (The Phantom) title since 1979. He has done a done a great artistic service to the medium of comics storytelling, and helping to continue the legend of the Phantom. He is best known for his extensive historical stories of the Phantom's skull ring origins dating back from Medieval times, to the time of the Roman empire, and the powerful rule of the Egyptians.
Mr. Leppänen also has done some amazing work on his science fiction related stories, including his fantastic adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs John Carter of Mars! The John Carter series is serialized on his website, and has been hand colored by Kari himself! Mr. Leppänen has an extensive website showcasing his art, and has a guest book if you want to drop him a message.

The Phantom Picto-Stories
Our goal with the Phantom Picto-Stories, is to try to bring a little nostalgia back from the "good 'ol days", when you and your family went to the theatre, and lined on the wall would be lobby cards, that basically told you the story of the film you were about to see. It is like looking at still shots from a film, although no film was ever actually made. The stories will be accompanied with photos, and dialogue, like a novel. Due to the performers busy schedules, and of course the sporadic bad weather we have here in the south, (heat, thunderstorms, snow, ice and freezing temperatures!) some of the people involved in the project, have never actually met face to face, but have been added in later with photo shop, thanks to the wizardry of our lead photographer, Magestiq!
We hope to entertain all the Phans out there that have supported the Phantom through the years, and hopefully to bring in a new generation of Phans also! Please drop us a line and let us know how we are doing, and what you would like to see!
The Phantom and Diana on location!
Our jungle for the most part is on location in the heart of Birmingham Alabama, at the beautiful Birmingham Botanical Gardens. It has an immense area to serve as our "jungle" backdrop, with varied locations, tropical, as well as a desert area. we have shot in different areas around town, and this summer I am hoping to make a trip to the Alabama Gulf coast to film a classic King features comic story called "The Belt". The Belt is the story of how the 21st retrieves his father"s (the 20th Phantom) stolen gun belt.
For now though, we are still trying to finish the exhaustive story of Diana's encounter with Phantom for the first time, so bear with us, we hope to finish soon!

Diana stops to give cover fire, while attempting to put pressure on the Phantom's wounds. "Phantom, we are almost to the horses, just don't pass out!" The Phantom looking over his shoulder in the direction of running footsteps getting closer by the second knows they do not have much time. " Don't worry about me, if I go down, run as fast as you can to the horses, and get back to Jungle Patrol headquarters, they will know what to do!"
This is a scene from the 'Enter Diana' storyline, where the Phantom wounded by a bullet, is protected by Diana. (Most of the photos we have taken to tell a story have taken us over a year to assemble, due to inclimate weather, illness, and availability of the actors.)
"....Unit 7,....unit 7 ! Be aware, the Phantom sighted in your area! .....Shoot on sight!!!"
THE PHANTOM PROJECT
".....Suddenly, the sound of drums echoing in the distance speak of a trouble at the trading post, near "Deep Woods" edge!"
Our main goal at the Phantom project, is to bring classic Phantom stories to you as told in pictures and words. Our inspiration for the 'picto-stories' are a blend of the old Phantom serial, the 1996 Billy Zane Phantom film, and the many comics and novels of the Phantom. Our first story, is entitled 'Enter Diana' . This tells the story of the Phantom's encounter with Diana Palmer, and her uncle Dave Palmer, during an attack on their expedition in the jungle. many years have passed since they last saw each other at school, when Kit was summoned to return home to take over the father's 'business'. She does not recognize her long lost love, and helps the Phantom set out on an adventure to recover a stolen idol from thieves who attacked them. We hope the stories will please the Phans, and fans of good clean fun and adventure of the old days! Please help continue to support the Phantom, by emailing King Features and telling them how much you love and support the Phantom and his adventures! Thank you all very much!
JAMES STERANKO
When we first started to do the photo shoots, I showed the actors the graphic illustration's of Jim Steranko. Jim was the pioneer of cinematic storytelling, and I wanted to mimic the movements, and the feel of movie lobby cards brought to life. As shown here in the wonderful painting by Steranko you have all the major elements of the Phantom jungle adventure. Phantom, Diana, Hero,Devil, danger, and excitement.
(We are working on a Steranko dedication page, so please bear with us while we finish the page.)

......All of us are kids at heart, and love the images of adventure through our imagination both literary, and in film. jungle movies and hero serials are being discovered by a new generation that are finding these lost 'gems' through the DVD compilations, and through the renewed interest in comics, and graphic novels. The image you see here is drawn, and colored by the legendary artist Jim Steranko, who has single handly changed the comic art form from one dimensional drawings, to giving you a three dimensional adventure for the naked eye! No other graphic illustrator has blended the comic art form with cinematic storytelling the way Mr. Steranko has. His paintings, and art still astound fans world wide. His art is an inspiration for our photo sessions. Thank you Jim Steranko for all your hard work, and endeavors! For more Steranko visual feasts for the eye please visit Tony Robertson's most excellent site at:http://www.thedrawingsofsteranko.com

DIANA PALMER

Diana Palmer. Beautiful, educated, explorer and adventurer. She is proficient with a bow, and a crack shot with a pistol, or a rifle. One time childhood sweetheart of Kit Walker, these two were destined to be together, even though there was a lapse of time, and a continent apart.
The Phantom's down through the ages have all picked strong willed, and courageous women to be their mates, thus ensuring the bloodline to be strong for the next generations to come. (Photo by Matt Young)

Diana would share in many an adventure with the Phantom, and eventually become the wife, and loving mother of two twin children Kit, and Heloise...........but that is a story for another time!
The Phantom deals out justice!
This Illustration was done by the fantastic Joe Jusko in 1996, for a trading card company. He captures all the elements of excitement and adventure of the Billy Zane Phantom film, that came out that same year also.

HERO
The Phantom would not be the Phantom without his horse, and thankfully after much searching, a horse was found to play the role of 'HERO'. Bud, is a champion racking horse, that we had a privilege to work with, and was an awe inspiring creature to see in person. he has won many titles, and we hope to work with him again in the future.
JULIE WALKER
We were very fortunate also to have run across model Kristen to play the role of Julie Walker. We went through many models before we finally settled on Kristen, and I am very glad we did.
During our first initial shoot, I had not realized it, but Kristen had been wearing the rig the entire time. She was walking around for 2+ hrs., with heavy reproduction six-guns, sand filled faux bullets, and heavy leather rig. Needless to say, she showed her true Phantom strength, and dedication to the shoot, and we hope to tell her origin as soon as the warmer weather season approaches this year.
UNCLE DAVE PALMER
I can't begin to thank our next player, Ross Carter enough for stepping in and portraying 'Uncle Dave Palmer'. We once again had been searching for the perfect person to fill this role, and thankfully Ross devoted one of his mornings, and took time from his busy schedule to come and do a shoot with us. We are hoping to do more with him in the upcoming weeks as the photo shoots progress. Thanks Ross!
JUNGLE PATROL
The thin line between chaos, and order in the jungle is the Jungle patrol. Only the finest, and best are selected to be among the ranks of the jungle patrol. Kevin Crews is a character actor that we had initially shot over a year ago, but all his pictures were lost in the computer crash, so we had to begin anew and re-shoot all his pics from scratch. Thank you Kevin for taking the time for the massive re-shoot. Kevo, will also be playing several other characters for us as well, at current count we have him lined up for 5 different roles.
